Insomnia Cookies Cardboard Box, Acrylic Paint

_____

Hinging on a sense of intimacy, this piece uses paint to explore my friends’ apartment as a liminal space. The painting, done atop of a (slightly decomposing) insomnia cookies box, features the other apartment in my small Covid pod--the only other indoor space in which I spend my time. Like contemporary figurative painters Doron Langberg and Jenna Gribbon, this work uses bright color and bold brush strokes to explore pleasure and intimacy in every day scenes.

The insomnia cookies box, stained with remnants from previous indulgences, locates the painting in time, and denotes the painting as quintessentially “college”. The leaks and stains and tears in the box remind me that everything is temporary, even the weird hazy state of lockdown which at the time of this painting seemed to stretch infinitely and indefinitely into the future.
