Self Portrait of a Twenty Something in College in 2021
_
Brown Paper CVS Bag, Acrylic Paint
This self portrait addresses two types of space: interior space and digital space. This vignette is one that screams 2020, capturing a dizzying moment of screen time during screen time. Though the physical space occupied during lockdown is unchanging, the digital landscape changes constantly, overwhelming the senses and sucking focus from reality. We think we are in class, or meeting a potential partner on a dating app, but really we are at home, squeezed in an ikea chair. Of course, this is not everyone’s experience of lockdown-- it is a privilege to sit amongst screens safely at home.
The CVS Bag as a site for a slow painting further ties the work to the present moment. Though many of our lives are in a liminal limbo suspended in space, time carries on. While the world halts, capitalism marches forward. We are forced to continue living, to go to class and work and to venture out to purchase things like medication and deodorant from the pharmacy, even in these “strange and uncertain times”.
