is a sculptural archive, containing a series of zines, paintings, and drawings arranged together in book form. The project consists of a series of subprojects, many of which experiment with found materials. I first began to work with found materials as a way to work around and through the limitations on space and access due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This practice of collecting, reflecting, and transforming has become essential to my work, serving to locate the zines, drawings, and paintings in external capitalist reality. The subprojects vary greatly in size and material, ranging from paintings on takeaway bags and boxes, to collections of discarded paper towel rags (which are recently a precious commodity), to ritualistic meditations on recipe pages from the Hello Fresh dinners my roommates and I cook together. The projects themselves range in themes, exploring topics like, color, digital vs. physical space, identity, and place, all connected through common threads of personal experience, material exploration, and time. Documented through video, a series of gifs, a reprinted book, and a website, the multiple iterations of this work collapse the space between digital and analogue representations, situating the work in the interstitial plane between pixel and print.

A Twenty Something in 2021

This project is an autoethnographic archive that uses personal experience to connect to broader social and cultural contexts. The subsections of zines, paintings, and drawings explore my personal experiences with relationships, identity and community, and space in order to connect to wider cultural social, political, historical understandings. Buried within the pages are quite vulnerable texts and images that bare truths I could otherwise not express, situated in time through image and material. The archive “manifests itself in the form of traces”, considering how past, present, and future can be contained through materials. This collection of traces places the work within space and time, specifically through the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. In a time that seems so alien and out of sync with life as we once knew it, we are helpless to watch as reality (namely: capitalism) marches forward. This project works both to trace the threads of history that course on throughout the pandemic, and to encapsulate relics of such an other worldly experience. As a means of tracing such experiences and histories, A Twenty Something considers and reclaims the exform, taking capitalist waste and transforming it. This work elaborates on cultural castaways to create an archive of exforms that both compresses material into memory, and notes that all materials are ephemeral, containing possibilities for future iterations within them.
